Bee and Wasp Exterminators Identify Early Signs of Bees and Wasp Infestation

hidden bee nest

Bees and wasps do not infest a location by chance.  There are several reasons bees and wasps infest certain places. Most people call bee and wasp exterminators when the situation is already beyond control.  Do not make the same mistake. Look for early signs of insect activity in the area to prevent full-blown bee or wasp infestations.

Identifying Bee Infestations

There are different types of bees. Carpenter bee, bumblebee, and honeybee are the most common types found in North America.  The first two lives in small colonies, while the third type can grow into a large colony.  Bees typically sting their victims when their territories are threatened.

• Carpenter bees and Bumblebees

Carpenter bees build their nest by burrowing holes in wood. Smooth holes (about 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter), with wood chips near the hole, may indicate the presence of carpenter bees.  Bumblebees, on the other hand, build their nest in cool undisturbed areas like a hole in the ground, inside sheds, in hollow trees, or even in a pile of garbage.

• Honeybees

In contrast to carpenter bees and bumblebees, honeybee colonies are big (number of bees in one colony can reach 60,000).  Honeybees extract nectar from the flowering plants, so it is normal to see them in your flower garden.

When the queen bee leaves the old colony in search of a new nesting place, you can see honeybees in large numbers. Once the queen bee has settled in an area, (a tree branch or someone’s porch), the worker bees will tend to the queen by surrounding her to keep her cool and safe.  While the queen bee is secure in her temporary place, some of the worker bees will spread out to find a suitable place for a new nest.  Honeybees prefer a hollowed space (i.e., a hollow tree trunk or a vacant space between wall) that is cool and will protect the queen and the colony.

If a honeybee colony is found, it is best to call the professionals to handle the bee situation for you. Bee and wasp exterminators can easily identify the type of honeybee they are dealing with.

For example, in the Los Angeles area, there are two types of honeybees, the European type and the Africanized type.  Africanized honeybees are more aggressive than the European type.  That is why it is best to call in professionals to perform bee removal in the Los Angeles area.

Identifying Wasp Infestations

Wasps like to nest in undisturbed spaces that can be accessed easily from the outside (like hollow tree trunks, abandoned rodent hole, sheds, garage, roof spaces and spaces in between walls).  Some of the early indications of possible infestation are the presence of wasp in the area and buzzing sound coming from wall cavities.  The presence of wasp in your place may indicate the existence of a wasp nest.  To prevent further infestation, the wasp nest needs to be found and removed.

A wasp exterminator near me advises their client to observe the movements of wasps to determine where they go after foraging for food.  This is where a wasp nest is typically found. Once the nest is found, call the professionals to handle the wasp removal for you.
